The Easter holidays rank among the most popular holiday times of the year. In total, BER is expecting 1,250,000 passengers from 11 April 2025 to 27 April 2025. Travellers will then also be able to use the first eight lanes with the new CT scanners at the security controls in area 5 of Terminal 1, where they will no longer need to unpack electronic devices and liquids. After the area has been converted, all control lanes in BER’s Terminal 1 are fully operational for the holidays. Installing the new technology in the eight screening lanes in the northern area will start following the Easter holidays and will be completed by autumn. Terminal 2 is already fully equipped with the new technology.
On the first day of the holidays alone, Friday, 11 April, the airport company is expecting 82,000 passengers at BER. The entire Easter weekend, from Good Friday to Easter Monday, will see some 300,000 passengers. Destinations on the Mediterranean, such as Spain, Turkey, Italy, France and Greece, are particularly popular.
“We are very satisfied with the new security control processes. The conversion in the southern area of Terminal 1 alone means that an estimated 50 percent more travellers per hour can pass through the controls. Thanks to the modern CT scanners, waiting times for our passengers will be reduced because liquids and electronics will no longer need to be removed from hand baggage. This will make flying much more comfortable in the future,” says Aletta von Massenbach, Chief Executive Officer of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH.
Installing the first eight new CT scanners in Terminal 1 began at the end of 2024. The devices have been in operation in Terminal 2 since the start of 2024. For 90 percent of travellers, waiting times there last year were less than ten minutes. At the new lanes, liquids no longer need to be unpacked. However, the EU-wide regulation specifying a limit of 100 ml for each liquid container, and 1 litre in total, still applies.
